Visiting Artist Erica Bailey

Erica Bailey is a New York based multimedia artist whose worked is based in three-dimensional practices. Originally from Ohio, she has created several large-scale installations at Ohio institutions, including The House that was Haunted Before It was Built (2007) at the Aronoff Center for Art and Design of the University of Cincinnati and Telescoping House (2010-2013) for the UnMuseum of the Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center. Recent exhibitions include Bronx Calling: The Third AIM Biennial at the Bronx Museum of the Arts and Its memory, the memory of its ribs, its knees, its shoulders at Smack Mellon in Brooklyn.

Her installations consist of built structures and scale models referencing vernacular architecture, often paired with video, sound, or still images suggesting the environs of these structures. She orchestrates the viewer's experience, subverting spatial and temporal expectations to create an experience that is alternately playful and disconcerting, making the viewer hyper-aware, both physically and emotionally, of his/her experience of space. Through these installations she explores the spaces that we build and occupy as vessels for memory, clear or obscure, and vehicles for the passage of time. In addition to installation, she also makes sculpture and digital photo-collages addressing these themes.
